Fort Desoto Park’s North Beach was named America’s best beach in 2005. Fort Desoto Park occupies 1136 acres on five interconnected islands in southern Pinellas county and is named for the 1898 Fort built for the Spanish-American War. Fort Desoto has several ruined buildings open for the public, as well as four 12 inch mortars and two 6 inch rifled artillery pieces. Both North Beach and East Beach have made the top ten list numerous times. Fort Desoto Park has two fishing piers, paved bike trails, picnic areas, a boat ramp, and camping areas.
